The Current Middle Ages
The Society for Creative Anachronism is a non-profit educational society dedicated to researching and re-creating the lives and artifacts of the middle ages. Through events such as taverns, wars, feasts, and tournaments, SCA members become part of the Current Middle Ages.
The SCA has thousands of members all over the world. The area of the world where SCA chapters exist is called the Knowne World and is divided into Kingdoms, Principalities, and Baronies, all of which are ruled by royalty.
You are in the Kingdom of Avacal, and within the Barony of Myrgan Wood. The Kingdom of Avacal is comprised of Saskatchewan, Alberta and parts of British Columbia. The Barony of Myrgan Wood is comprised of Saskatchewan communities north of the South Saskatchewan River including Saskatoon, Humboldt, Prince Albert, Meadow Lake, Melfort, North Battleford, and Rosetown, to name a few.
Chivalry & Etiquette
The SCA upholds the ideals of chivalry and fealty established in the Middle Ages. All SCA members are considered to be nobility and are expected to behave as such: with honour, loyalty, courtesy and generosity.
Combat
Armoured combat, fencing and archery are the three forms of combat in the SCA. All combat is regulated for safety and fair play. Armoured combatants participate in wars and tournaments. The sword and shield are most commonly used but many other weapons are constructed and experimented with.
Fencers recreate late-16th century fencing techniques. Unsharpened steel blades are the weapons used in this forum. Provosts and tournaments are held at events, giving fencers the opportunity to show off their finesse.
Archers participate in both target archery (in local and kingdom level challenges), and combat-archery where blunted arrows and bows with limited poundage allows them to shoot armoured combatants.
Create
Creating — whether it is garb, armour, tools, or art (to name a few); making things is a big part of our community. If you like to manufacture things, or would like to learn how, it is easy to find members who are on the same path. There are endless resources for you to start something rudimentary, or to run down rabbit-holes learning how our predecessors did it with limited technology. Merchant your work, show it off at Arts & Science displays and competitions, or perhaps gift it to the one who inspires you. ꨄꨄꨄ
Perform
Come make a joyous noise and celebrate with us. Our bards bring dancing, music, story-telling, and joy to many events. If you prefer the entertainment of the modern day, we encourage filks (parodies) of your favourite songs. Heralds are loud and proud, and a necessary part of any tournament or court.
Learn
Many members of the SCA take on new names and historical personalities. The narrative of humankind is exciting, and you will have an audience to share what you learn or want to know. The SCA is a community of players in a game that welcomes everyone. Participate as much or as little as you want.
There are opportunities to steward events, make friends, camp and travel, and be honoured by your peers.
